To the Core - Identify My Values
Understanding our core values is fundamental to developing a strong sense of who we are. Values are the principles that guide our decisions and behaviors, reflecting what is truly important to us. They’re the threads that connect our emotions, beliefs and our greatest sense of self.
When our actions align with our values - the choices we make, and the ones we reject - we experience a sense of authenticity and fulfilment. We feel deeply that we’re being true to ourselves, acting in the highest good, and relating to others in a way that we know to be genuine. If we value honesty, we live by the rules of open, genuine expression and integrity. We want to live and relate to others is truthful way. Lies are avoided, and we understand that real trust comes from honesty. Trust might then be the deeper cover value
Our self-awareness is enhanced when we know our core values; our previous doubts about our actions are erased, and our sense of self is reinforced. There is less ambiguity in what we say, and so people can get to know the genuine us, there is no confusion about who we are and so our character begins to develop in the eyes of others and when you live in honesty and truth, there is no need to lie, cover tracks or pretend to be something we’re not. Life becomes easier.
When we live according to our values, we strengthen our sense of identity. This increases our confidence and reduces the likelihood of us being swayed by external opinions or societal pressures when we’re in a difficult situation or not feeling our best. Our values act as a compass, guiding us through life's challenges and help us stay true to ourselves. Over time, living in alignment with our values cultivates a more authentic, grounded sense of who we are.
Discovering and living by your values is a journey of self-discovery that significantly enriches your life. By understanding what truly matters to you, you build a strong foundation for your identity, making decisions that reflect your true self. Embrace this journey, and let your values guide you to a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Identifying Your Core Values
To begin identifying your values, reflect on moments when you felt strong emotional or even physical reactions to actions, events, and words, including your own. They can be both negative and positive reactions.
Think about when you’ve felt your most alive, content, or proud of yourself. Common values include honesty, kindness, freedom, and growth.
Think about when something felt wrong, uncomfortable; you values may have unconsciously brought up feelings of unhappiness, anger, or shame. The common values that you may be subconsciously aware of are empathy, (in)justice, or integrity.
Next week, you’ll be able to download a free workbook, which includes an exercise to look at 50 Values, and decide which ones are your personal drivers at this time.
Remember, values are deeply personal and may evolve over time as you grow and change.
